Faster Passenger Trains at Five Stations: Infrastructure Investments Improve Travel Quality

LTG Infra, a member of the LTG Group, has increased the maximum speed of passenger trains to 120 km/h at Lukšiai, Dūseikiai, Telšiai, Šateikiai, and Kūlupėnai stations. Previously, the maximum speed at most stations was 100 km/h, so the infrastructure was maintained according to these parameters.

To ensure higher speeds, the quality of the railway tracks was improved by welding joints, replacing defective rails and sleepers, and correcting geometric parameters. This work cost approximately €350,000.

"It is important to the Ministry that rail transport be high-quality and convenient. Faster trains are one way to ensure better connections between municipalities. We are making every effort to ensure that train travel meets the population’s needs as much as possible," said Minister of Transport Juras Taminskas.

Higher speeds at stations will allow for more efficient use of train traction, avoid additional fuel consumption caused by braking and accelerating, shorten travel time, and improve ride comfort.

"Investments in railway maintenance and modernization are essential if we want to offer passengers what they expect – higher train speeds, punctuality, and ride comfort. Only high-quality infrastructure can ensure smooth and efficient railway operations, which is our priority," said Vytis Žalimas, head of LTG Infra.

As part of its investment projects, LTG Infra replaced all 28 switches on the main and arrival/departure tracks at stations where speed limits will increase. The new switches comply with EU standards. This work amounted to approximately €7 million. These switches ensure safer and faster train movement through station areas. This is why LTG Infra is constantly implementing switch renewal programs that will allow for increased speeds at other stations in the future.

The LTG Group, of which LTG Infra is a part, is the largest railway group in the Baltic States. The group operates in three main areas: freight and passenger rail transport, as well as the management, maintenance, and development of public railway infrastructure.

The LTG Group consists of the following main subsidiaries: LTG Infra, LTG Cargo, LTG Link, and GTC.
