LTG launches military mobility enhancement project in Palemonas
LTG Infra, a company belonging to the LTG Group, is launching a military mobility infrastructure development project in Palemonas. This project will strengthen Lithuania's capacity to receive and handle NATO military cargo efficiently. Contracts with the tender winners, Gevalda, Kauno keliai and Statybų techninė priežiūra, have been signed and work is expected to be completed within 16 months. The total value of the project, including design, expert services, contracting and technical supervision, is €37.37 million.
"Railways are critically important for both civilian evacuation and the rapid movement of military forces throughout Europe. By investing in the development of military mobility infrastructure in Palemonas, we are strengthening the security of Lithuania and the entire Baltic region," said the Minister of Transport, Juras Taminskas.
This project will significantly increase the loading and storage capacity of the intermodal terminal. This is particularly important for receiving and transshipping NATO military cargo arriving on the European 1435 mm gauge, which is then transported further on the 1520 mm gauge to Latvia, Estonia, or the port of Klaipėda. At the same time, it will ensure the German brigade in Lithuania can be deployed and serviced more efficiently.
According to Egidijus Lazauskas, CEO of the LTG Group, developing military mobility infrastructure is one of the company's core activities and contributes to national security priorities.
'The project is an important part of the LTG Group's contribution to national security. A dual-purpose infrastructure for military and civilian use will be created in Palemonas, ensuring the loading of military equipment and improving mobility on the railway network," he says.
The project is divided into two parts. One of the most important elements is the construction of a new, reinforced loading yard. A reinforced loading yard measuring approximately 36,000 m² — equivalent to around five standard football pitches — will be constructed in Palemonas. It will be able to hold loads weighing up to 100 tonnes and vehicles weighing up to 120 tonnes. In total, around 46,000 m² of hard surfaces will be constructed, reconstructed or repaired.
Two 1435 mm gauge railway tracks and one 1520 mm gauge railway track with rear ramps will be built. Additional infrastructure will be created for the reception and handling of military cargo, engineering networks will be laid and area security systems will be installed. Measures to reduce noise, vibration and air pollution will also be implemented.
Another part of the project will involve expanding the European 1435 mm gauge railway infrastructure. Three new railway tracks, each with a usable length of at least 750 metres, will be built, and three existing tracks will be extended to the same length.
In total, approximately 5.5 km of railway track will be reconstructed and 12 switches installed during the project. Additionally, the existing engineering networks will be reconstructed and new ones laid during the reconstruction of the railway yard.
This project will play a key role in the Palemonas junction and the country's military mobility infrastructure, strengthening Lithuania's position in the NATO logistics chain.
Advanced BIM (Building Information Modelling) methodology will be used to represent functional and physical objects in digital space, ensuring the effective management of design and construction processes.
