14 important railway crossings will become safer and more convenient for road users

LTG Infra, the company responsible for managing the LTG Group's railway infrastructure network, is set to modernise these crossings to enhance safety and improve accessibility.
The crossings are located at stations and/or between stations where there is heavy train and car traffic. These are: Panevėžys–Subačius, Gustonys–Panevėžys (Panevėžys station), Šilutė–Stoniškiai (Šilutė station), Kyviškės–Valčiūnai, Lentvaris–Senieji Trakai (Lentvaris station), Klaipėda–Rimkai, Senieji Trakai–Rūdiškės (Rūdiškės station), Kazlų Rūda–Vinčai, Skapiškis–Rokiškis, Vinčai–Marijampolė (Vinčai station), Valkininkai–Matuizos (Valkininkai station), Rimkai–Vilkyčiai and Matuizos–Varėna (Matuizos station).
'The safety of road users is one of our most important goals. We are consistently investing in infrastructure upgrades and innovations, and we are working closely with the relevant authorities to encourage responsible behaviour among drivers and pedestrians. Only through joint efforts can we improve safety at level crossings and protect lives," says Juras Taminskas, the Minister of Transport.
The signalling equipment at the 14 level crossings scheduled for modernisation will be upgraded and video surveillance cameras will be installed. Some of the level crossings will also be equipped with pedestrian crossing signalling, obstacle detection systems and road condition detection systems, as well as information display boards.
According to Vytautas Žalimas, head of LTG Infra, although modernising level crossings requires significant investment, LTG Infra's top priority is to make traffic at level crossings safer and more convenient.
"We are working consistently to ensure that the number of accidents continues to decline and that there are no fatalities on the railways. The partial financing from the Ministry of Transport and the EU Cohesion Fund, which will allow us to modernize another 14 priority level crossings in our network, will contribute significantly to these goals and help us ensure even safer traffic for trains, cars, and pedestrians," says V. Žalimas.
The level crossing will be modernized by the company UAB Fima, which won the tender. The estimated value of the work is over €5.6 million excluding VAT. The work is planned to be completed within 12 months from the date of signing the contract with the tender winner.
The Ministry of Transport, together with LTG Infra, has examined public level crossings on the railway network and selected 24 priority level crossings for modernization, which are located on the international transport corridor (TEN-T) North Sea–Baltic Sea lines Vilnius–Klaipėda and Kaišiadorys–Kybartai and other important main lines, which are being modernized with EU funds. The next stage of TEN-T crossing modernization works on the Vilnius–Klaipėda line is planned in the near future. In addition, LTG Infra has modernized 11 more crossings at its own expense.
In addition, during the first stage of the level crossing safety improvement program, the level crossings between Lentvaris–Vievis and Kyviškės–Valčiūnai were reconstructed into two-level intersections – a viaduct and a tunnel were built.
Please note that LTG Infra has signed a contract worth €3.5 million for the modernisation of nine priority crossings on the Vilnius–Klaipėda TEN-T corridor. All nine level crossings have now been modernised. This project is also partially financed by European Union funds.
During the first stage of the level crossing safety improvement programme, the level crossings between Lentvaris and Vievis, and between Kyviškės and Valčiūnai, were reconstructed to create two-level intersections, with the construction of a viaduct and a tunnel.
The LTG Group, of which LTG Infra is a part, is the largest railway group in the Baltic States. The group operates in three main areas: freight and passenger rail transport, as well as the management, maintenance, and development of public railway infrastructure.
The LTG Group consists of the following main subsidiaries: LTG Infra, LTG Cargo, LTG Link, and GTC.
