Dynamic Testing Completed for the Vilnius–Klaipėda Electrification Project: Just One Step Away from Operation
LTG Group company LTG Infra has successfully completed one of the most important stages of the Vilnius–Klaipėda railway electrification project: dynamic testing on the Radviliškis–Klaipėda section. The project is the largest railway infrastructure modernization initiative of its kind in the history of independent Lithuania.
The final dynamic tests were carried out over four nights and covered the entire newly electrified section between Radviliškis and Klaipėda. During the tests, the performance of the overhead contact system was assessed at maximum permitted speeds across the sections from Radviliškis to Kužiai, Kužiai to Telšiai, Telšiai to Kūlupėnai, and Kūlupėnai to Klaipėda. To ensure the reliability of the infrastructure, multiple test runs were conducted in both directions on each section. All planned tests were completed successfully, and the preliminary results confirm the smooth operation of the newly electrified infrastructure throughout the route.
According to Vytautas Radzevičius, LTG’s Director of Strategy and Business Development, the completion of the Vilnius–Klaipėda railway electrification marks an important milestone in the ongoing transformation of Lithuania’s railway system and lays the foundation for long-term change in the country’s transport sector.
“The electrification of the country’s main railway corridor is far more than an infrastructure project. It is an investment in the future of mobility, enabling sustainable passenger and freight transport services while allowing us to make more efficient use of the railway network and enhance the overall effectiveness of rail transport,” says V. Radzevičius.
These tests successfully concluded the inspection and verification of the entire newly electrified railway line from Vilnius to Klaipėda.
“With the completion of testing, we have entered the final stretch of the electrification project. The successful results confirm that the newly installed infrastructure meets all requirements and is ready for international compliance certification. This is another important step towards building a more modern, sustainable, and competitive railway network in Lithuania,” says Vytis Žalimas, CEO of LTG Infra.
The completion of dynamic testing marks the transition to the final phase of the project. Certification procedures are currently underway, and once completed, the electrified Vilnius–Klaipėda line will be approved for regular electric train operations. This will make it possible to introduce the new Stadler electric trains on one of the country’s most popular routes, providing passengers with more comfortable and environmentally friendly travel.
The Vilnius–Klaipėda railway electrification project covers a 363-kilometre railway corridor, with more than 900 kilometres of overhead contact line infrastructure installed. The project consists of three stages: electrification of the Vilnius railway hub, the Kaišiadorys–Radviliškis section, and the Radviliškis–Klaipėda section. Upon completion, the share of electrified railways in Lithuania will increase from 8% to 28%.
The project will enable a greater share of passenger and freight transport to be carried out using electricity, reducing the environmental impact of the transport sector and enhancing the competitiveness of rail transport. It is estimated that the project will reduce air pollution by approximately 150,000 tonnes annually, while the total social and economic benefits over its operational lifetime are expected to exceed EUR 700 million.
